Embrace the Pink: Delicious Blackberry Sage Frozen Yogurt for Breast Cancer Awareness
The vibrant, comforting hue of pink often evokes feelings of warmth and joy. For my two daughters, it’s their absolute favorite color. But beyond its aesthetic appeal, pink carries profound significance each October, symbolizing Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This month serves as a crucial reminder of a disease that touches countless lives globally, including my own family’s. It’s a time for increased awareness, vital education, and a collective commitment to supporting those affected and advancing research towards a cure.
To honor this powerful initiative, I’ve proudly joined forces with a group of dedicated fellow bloggers, led by Erin of Dinners, Dishes and Desserts and Cassie of Bake Your Day. Our shared mission is to craft healthy, predominantly pink-themed recipes that not only delight the palate but also draw much-needed attention to breast cancer. While my schedule didn’t permit a full week of contributions, my heart was set on participating. Breast cancer has woven itself deeply into the fabric of my life, influencing generations of my family. This cause is incredibly personal and profoundly worthy of our collective effort.
A Personal Journey: The Profound Impact of Breast Cancer on Our Lives
Indeed, breast cancer has left an indelible mark on my family’s history. The stories I carry are a mix of sorrow and resilience, a testament to the unpredictable nature of this disease. While many outcomes bring hope, others remind us of the battles still to be won.
Remembering My Grandmother: A Legacy of Awareness
My maternal grandmother passed away from metastatic breast cancer when I was in my early teens. Living a considerable distance away, I didn’t have the opportunity to know her intimately or to say a final farewell. However, my mother spent her final days by her side, an experience that profoundly shaped her. Ever since, my mother has been unwavering in her commitment to regular self-breast exams, a habit she instilled in her children and one that underscores the vital importance of personal vigilance in detecting potential issues early. Her dedication to self-care became a quiet, powerful legacy, born from a deeply felt loss.
My Aunt’s Triumph: The Power of Early Detection
On my father’s side, my aunt has faced her own battles with remarkable courage and fortune. She discovered her cancer twice in relatively early stages, proving the life-saving impact of prompt detection. The first time, she underwent a lumpectomy followed by radiation therapy. Years later, when the disease reappeared, she made the difficult decision to proceed with a full mastectomy. Thanks to her proactive approach and the advancements in medical treatment, she has been cancer-free for many years. Her story is a powerful reminder that early diagnosis and swift intervention can lead to positive outcomes, offering immense hope and emphasizing why awareness campaigns are so critical.
Anne’s Enduring Legacy: A Life Cut Short
The most heartbreaking chapter of all belongs to my stepmother, Anne, my father’s wife and the mother of my youngest sibling, Jon. In her 40s, Anne was diagnosed with breast cancer. She endured the grueling combined treatments of radiation and chemotherapy, emerging five years later seemingly cured and cancer-free. We all rejoiced in her triumph, believing the worst was behind us.
However, about a year or two later, a persistent cough led her back to the doctor. The diagnosis was devastating: lung cancer. Further investigation revealed that it was, in fact, metastatic breast cancer, having spread aggressively to her lymph nodes and other areas, including the bones of her hips. Anne and my father bravely pursued every possible treatment option to halt the disease’s relentless progression, but as is often the tragic case with advanced metastasis, it was too late. The cancer eventually reached her brain, stealing her life in late August of 2002. She was only 53 years old, and my brother Jon was just 16, forever changed by this profound loss.
The Power of Pink: Indulge in Blackberry Sage Frozen Yogurt
These stories, both hopeful and heartbreaking, underscore a critical truth: breast cancer is a disease that spares no one. It demands our awareness, our support, and our unwavering commitment to fight it through every means possible. Many stories culminate in happy endings, a testament to medical advancements and incredible personal strength. Yet, for others, the journey is tragically cut short. Let us channel our collective energy into promoting awareness, supporting research, and advocating for better care.

Why This Recipe Matters: Health Benefits and Unique Flavors
This Blackberry Sage Frozen Yogurt isn’t just a delicious dessert; it’s also packed with wholesome ingredients that contribute to a healthy lifestyle:
- Blackberries: Bursting with antioxidants, vitamins (C and K), and fiber, blackberries are known for their anti-inflammatory properties and ability to support overall health. Their natural sweetness and tartness are the heart of this frozen treat.
- Sage: Beyond its aromatic appeal, sage is an herb revered for its medicinal properties. It contains compounds with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, adding a sophisticated, earthy note that beautifully complements the fruit. The subtle infusion of sage transforms a simple berry yogurt into something truly special.
- Full-Fat Greek Yogurt: A powerhouse of protein, Greek yogurt helps keep you feeling full and satisfied. It’s also rich in probiotics, which support gut health, and calcium for strong bones. Using full-fat yogurt ensures a wonderfully creamy texture for your frozen dessert.
- Low-Carb Sweetener: By opting for a powdered sweetener like erythritol or Swerve, this recipe becomes an excellent choice for those managing sugar intake, following a low-carb, or ketogenic diet. It allows you to enjoy a sweet treat without the glycemic spike of traditional sugar.
- Vodka (Optional, but Recommended): A small amount of alcohol helps prevent the frozen yogurt from freezing rock-solid, resulting in a smoother, more scoopable texture straight from the freezer. It’s a secret ingredient for achieving that perfect, creamy consistency without adding a noticeable alcoholic flavor.
This Blackberry Sage Frozen Yogurt is a testament to how simple, wholesome ingredients can come together to create an extraordinary dessert. It’s a sweet, tangy, and subtly herbal treat that’s not only a pleasure to eat but also aligns with a mindful approach to nutrition.

Blackberry Sage Frozen Yogurt
Ingredients
- 10 oz frozen blackberries
- 1/2 cup water
- 1/4 cup sage leaves, roughly chopped
- 2 cups full-fat Greek yogurt
- 1/2 cup powdered sweetener (such as sugar, erythritol, or honey. I used Swerve Sweetener)
- 2 tbsp vodka
Instructions
- In a medium, heavy-bottomed pot over medium heat, combine the frozen blackberries, water, and roughly chopped sage leaves. Bring the mixture to a gentle boil, then reduce heat and let it simmer for about 15 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.
- After simmering, use a wooden spoon or potato masher to crush the berries thoroughly in the pot. Remove the pot from the heat and let the mixture sit and steep for an additional 30 minutes. This allows the sage to infuse deeply into the blackberry juice.
- Once steeped, transfer the berry mixture to a fine-mesh strainer placed over a medium bowl. Allow the juices to drain completely, pressing firmly on the solids with the back of a spoon to extract as much liquid as possible. If the mixture is very thick and syrupy, you can add a small amount of extra water and stir it to help release more juices. Discard the remaining berry solids.
- Into the strained blackberry-sage juice, whisk in the full-fat Greek yogurt and your chosen powdered sweetener until thoroughly combined and smooth.
- Cover the mixture and refrigerate it until it is well chilled, ideally for at least one hour. This step is crucial for achieving the best texture in your frozen yogurt.
- Just before churning, stir in the vodka. The alcohol helps to keep the frozen yogurt from freezing too hard, resulting in a creamier, more scoopable consistency.
- Pour the chilled mixture into the canister of your ice cream maker. Churn according to the manufacturer’s directions until it reaches a soft-serve consistency.
- Once churned, transfer the soft frozen yogurt to an airtight container. Press a piece of plastic wrap directly onto the surface of the yogurt to prevent ice crystal formation, then freeze until firm but not rock-hard, typically about 2 hours.
Notes
Serves 6. Each serving has approximately 6g of net carbs (this is an estimate based on the amount of berries used and the juice extracted).
Your Role in the Fight Against Breast Cancer
Breast cancer has impacted my family in profound ways, highlighting the urgent need for continued awareness and action. Every story, every journey, and every life touched by this disease reinforces our responsibility to engage in this crucial fight. While some narratives bring joyous relief, others are heartbreakingly tragic. This duality underscores the importance of supporting every facet of the breast cancer cause, from prevention and early detection to treatment and finding a cure.
Let us all commit to being more aware. This means regular self-examinations, scheduling routine screenings, and being informed about risk factors. It also means supporting the incredible organizations dedicated to breast cancer research, providing patient support, and advocating for improved healthcare. Whether through donations, participating in charity walks, or simply sharing information, every action, big or small, contributes to a larger impact. Together, we can make a difference, ensuring more stories have happy endings and that future generations face a world free from the threat of breast cancer.
